When the Data Is Empty: Football Needs Writers Who Know How to Say No

A long analytical report arrived on the desk: nine sections, many headings, but zero usable data. No player names, no match scores, no transfer numbers. It was a powerful reminder that in modern football media, the bravest sentence is often "I don't know yet." Based on more than a decade of reporting on Vietnamese football, I argue that empty data should not be filled with invented insights. Instead, it should be treated as an invitation to return to patient observation, direct interviews, and honest storytelling. Football fans do not need perfect narratives; they need real people and genuine analysis. When a report says there is not enough data to judge, that is not a failure — it is proof that the editorial process understands its own limits. Great football writing, like a great match, respects the rhythm of the game: sometimes it is better to wait, watch, and listen than to publish a hollow conclusion too quickly.
