Manchester United, Lewis Hall and the Lesson of a Broken Clock

The league season is only two rounds old, but Manchester United have already conceded four goals. Two came down the left, the flank where Luke Shaw was beaten by Fatawu in the match against Ipswich. Watching the replay in Rome, I recalled what recruitment director Jason Wilcox said during the summer transfer window: "We'd like to wait for a better opportunity." The window is closed now, but a better opportunity has not arrived. Before talking transfers, talk time — a broken clock kills every deal. United entered the summer with a clear need: a left-back. Luke Shaw was the only natural option, but his fitness has always been a major risk. They chased Lewis Hall, but Newcastle — after selling several key players — had no need for money and demanded £75 million, a global record for a full-back. United refused. Other targets such as Fredi Kadioglu or Ian Maatsen were over-priced; Jorge Salinas was raw. They tried to loan Alejandro Balde, but Barcelona only wanted a permanent sale. They waited, the market closed, and United came away empty-handed. The problem is not simply about numbers. The club has prioritized attacking signings for years while letting the defence age. Four years ago, they were also fragile at left-back; today it is the same, with players older and more injury-prone. When Shaw cannot play, the coach has to move Diogo Dalot from right-back. Dalot, right-footed, cuts inside, and the flank loses attacking width. The situation has become so stuck that midfielder Carlos Baleba has been listed as an emergency left-back option. That is not a tactical solution; it is patching holes. The 2026 note is still in my drawer – I never delete a history of mistakes. That year I learned that when a deal stalls, you must quickly pivot to another option. United did not do that. They let Wilcox say "wait for a better opportunity," but on the pitch, the space remains. The contracts of Shaw, Maguire and Martinez are about to expire, and a planned overhaul may explain why they wanted to delay investment. But the cost of waiting is not money; it is points lost and faith eroded. I saw a player cry in a meeting room over three months of unpaid wages – football is not just tactics. But when a club is poorly prepared, the fall can also begin in that meeting room. By January, they will have to act, buy or loan, or keep paying with form. A big club cannot keep waiting for a "good opportunity" while the season keeps moving.
